Some dogs will not respond to normal dog training methods no matter what you do, so rather than alienate all your neighbors and family try to put this into perspective.

This type of training collar most usually has several levels of correction so you need not be afraid that you are putting him through a lot of discomfort. Naturally he is going to feel something or there wouldn’t be much point to the collar, but with several strengths of shock you can make it as gentle or otherwise as you choose.

Usually these bark collars have a time-out period whereby if the dog has been barking a lot and has therefore had a number of stings, it will switch off to give him a rest from correction. Then after a specific period it will start up again.

These time-out periods have another use, they give the dog time to realize that it is when he barks that he gets the sting and this is really part of the learning process.

Some of these collars increase the level of ’stimulation’ if the dog continues to bark, but I would think this wouldn’t have to happen many times before he cottoned on to why this was happening.

It is rather difficult handling this excessive barking. For one thing you really don’t want to discourage protection type barking, that is probably why you have a dog in the first place, as some protection. An early warning system if you like. This is the right sort of barking,but what you don’t want is barking all the time and at any little thing. This has to be the most annoying sound ever and can lose you a lot of friends and give rise to a lot of animosity between neighbors.

Another way to look at it is that your dog doesn’t have much fun if you are always having a go at him. He won’t realize it at the time but I am certain he will know the difference when he has learned bark control and you can stop chastising him all the time.

There are different sizes to suit different size dogs, naturally you wouldn’t need a collar that you would use on a labrador for a small dog like a pug, You can pick from a number of sizes, one that is quite suitable for your pet.

I have only dealt with the shock type of collars up to now but there are also ultrasonic bark collars. This type are good for very small dogs where a heavier collar type might not be totally suitable. The ultrasonic type can also work to correct other bad habits like chewing, jumping up, or digging etc.

You can have outdoor ultrasonic bark control systems, I have seen some that look like a little bird house. They can detect a bark up to 50 feet away and have 4 levels of operation. These are quite durable and completely weatherproof.

Some have a lesser range, for instance 25 feet. You don’t need to have any type of receiver or collar, the dog will get the ultrasonic sound and it is going to associate it very quickly with his barking – and stop, pronto!

If none of the previous types of bark collars appeal to you you could always look into the ones which emit a spray of citronella near to the dogs nose when he barks. Animals really do not like this odor and again, they soon learn to associate the smell with the bark and cease barking.

Animals may appear stupid when they bark at what we think is nothing, but they are anything but stupid. When something affects them they will learn what is necessary for their own comfort.

I have read where a person only had to use a shock type corrective collar twice. Now that is quick study in any ones language.

Anti bark collars are just that, they teach the dog not to bark incessantly, for no good reason. Naturally you wouldn’t want to discourage protection type barking, but nuisance barking would bring a definite affirmative vote.

Quite honestly an incessantly barking dog can be quite distressful both to the owner and to people around it. Your dog would have to be totally dumb not to realize that the longer he barked the louder the sound got until it probably would be a bit uncomfortable.

The Citronella one employs a little container filled with citric smelling liquid, and when the collar detects throat vibrations, meaning the dog was barking, it releases a spray right in front of the dog’s nose. Now dogs do not like this citrus smell so pretty soon, unless he is completely brain dead, he will connect this smell with his barking – and stop.

You maybe weren’t aware but dog trainers have been using this same type of collar for years to train dogs because it is the quickest and safest method to get them to behave.

You should have your unruly dog under control is just a matter of a couple of weeks of wearing this collar.

No longer will you come home expecting to find chewed shoes, the litter bin upset and garbage all over the floor etc. All should be calm and well ordered.

A particularly good point with the shock, it is always the same, a definite NO. Sometimes your voice tone can differ and that can confuse a dog. I say the shock will be the same, but there are plenty of these collars that give you a range of strengths for the shocks. I expect he would have to do something really bad to warrant the top of the range.

I would think chasing cars comes into that category. This is something you need to get under control as quickly as possible. Chasing cars is obviously dangerous, to the motorist and also to your dog. This must be stopped immediately, if not before!

Perhaps you would like to let your dog be out the front of your house when it has no fence, this can be done by giving the dog a warning sound when he gets a bit too near the road. If he ignores the sound then you give him a shock and pretty soon he will not go anywhere near the road.

Having a badly behaved dog is likely to make you unpopular as well. You might well think – love me love my dog, but that is easier said than done if the dog in question does not obey commands. If it will not sit or lay down when you command but rampages around, possibly in someone elses home, you are definitely going to outstay your welcome.

These training collars which incidentally come in a large variety of styles and prices, are not in any way cruel. If you choose a shock collar it isn’t a big shock, just enough to make the dog stop short and wonder what that was that he felt.

Don’t think of the collars as punishment for bad behavior, they are not, they are a way to get your dog to obey you. In the end the use of this dog training collar is going to make your dog a happier dog because he won’t be constantly reprimanded for bad behavior.

This type of training collar is favored by breeders and trainers alike. The dog is in no way harmed by the collar he is merely shown that what he is doing is unacceptable.

If you were to choose the shock collar, the dog would just receive a gentle shock, probably more of a tingling sensation, when the collar received signs from the dogs throat vibrations that he was either going to bark or was actually barking at the time. The collar would then emit a small shock and in time the dog would associate barking with getting an unpleasant sensation and thus he would think twice before barking.

There are different types of bark collar, you can get what is called a Citronella collar, which has a small reservoir to hold Citronella liquid and when the dog barks a mist of this liquid is sprayed in front of his nose.

Dogs do not like this odor and will quickly start to think that if he barks he is going to have to put up this nasty smell in his nose, so he doesn’t bark.

Many people who actually think that the shock collar represents cruelty to the dog would only use the Citronella, although the shock really is only slight and cannot be in any construed as cruelty, but everyone is entitled to their own choice.

Then there is another type which emits a sonic sound when the dog barks, again initiated by the collar recognizing throat vibrations. If the dog continues barking the sound will eventually get louder and louder until the dog ceases barking. The sound is not audible to humans so you wouldn’t have the nuisance of the added noise from the collar.

It is possible that the only way these collars would not work would be if the dog in question was deaf. I believe you would have to employ a different method of correcting the barking habit in a deaf dog.

If you have a dog which constantly barks for no particular reason it can be such a frustrating thing. Your neighbors could complain and sometimes these disputes lead to the dog being taken away or even people suffering legal action resulting in them being evicted from their homes.

Nobody likes having disputes with their neighbors I am sure, plus if you have this noisy dog perhaps your family might not like being around it. All round it is quite a problem and one which for your own sanity as well, you need to solve.

You need to get rid of the problem in the best way possible so that your dog no longer represents a problem to you and your family. Eventually even the best loved dog is going to outstay its welcome if it just barks incessantly so a bark collar would seem to be the best solution all round, for you and for your dog.
